Biography

Born the son of a Vienna copyist, Wagner began his acting career in 1835 at the Theater an der Wien when has was only 17 years of age. After an interlude in Pest in 1844 he moved to Leipzig, where he gave many successful performances. Heinrich Laube eventually managed to bring Wagner (who had, for a brief period, also been acting in Berlin) to the Vienna Burgtheater on a lifelong contract.
